2018 F-150 Truck in Medford, NJ

The 2018 Ford F-150 Turns Forty with New Engines and Power

When your truck is the bestselling pickup in America and it reaches a milestone birthday, you celebrate, which is exactly what Ford is doing in 2018 with the F-150.

The Ford F-150, which is turning 40 this year, is getting a major update for its birthday and, when Ford celebrates, they do it in a big way. Here at Medford Ford, we're excited to present these changes to our New Jersey customers.

New Engine & Transmission Options

2018 Ford F-150 Engines and Transmission

While a lot of drivers in the Hammonton and Mount Holly area will recognize much about the way the 2018 F-150 looks, there are many changes going on under the hood.

The biggest news about this outing is the headline-grabbing diesel engine. While the turbodiesel has been an option in other Ford F-series pickups for several model years, 2018 will mark the first time drivers can order their F-150 with a 3.0-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V6.

Ford has announced that the diesel engine won't be available until later in the year 2018, but, at Medford Ford, we're already looking forward to it and can't wait to see what kind of power, fuel economy, and utility ratings it gets.

As exciting as the new diesel option is, it's not the only big engine news to come out of the 2018 Ford F-150. The previous base engine, a 3.5-liter V6, is being replaced with a more powerful and more fuel efficient 3.3-liter V6.

Plus, the F-150's other engine options, a turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 and a 5.0-liter V8 engines, will both receive a more robust, bump up in power for 2018.

Finally, both the planned turbodiesel and the newly-revamped, optional gas-powered engines will now come with a smooth, new, ten-speed automatic transmission. However, as with previous models, the standard V6 engine will still come paired to a six-speed automatic transmission.

2018 F-150 Improvements

2018 Ford F-150 Utility Ratings and Fuel Economy

As with any F-150 Ford makes, the 2018 version can be counted on when you need a powerful machine to get the job done. Drivers in Mount Laurel, Voorhees, and beyond will love that the F-150 can tow and haul thousands of pounds.

Choose carefully when shopping for an F-150 pickup truck, because the engine really determines what kind of weight you're going to be able to tow with your truck. For example, the 5.0-liter V8 can tow up to 8,900 pounds, and the 2.7-liter V6 around 7,900 pounds.

How you configure the axles and ratios for your truck impact your tow rating as well. In fact, opting for 3.73 axles, instead of 3.31 axle ratio, will increase the V8 F-150's maximum towing capacity to 10,800 pounds.

Of course, it will come as no surprise that the fuel economy you get with your 2018 F-150 is also dependent on which engine option you choose. Some of the numbers you can expect include:

  • 19 mpg in the city and 25 highway for the 3.3-liter V6
  • 20 mpg in the city and 26 highway for the 2.7-liter V6
  • 16 mpg in the city and 22 highway for the V8

2018 Ford F-150 Strength and Appearance

Despite all the changes, fans of the Ford F-150 will be happy to know that a lot will remain the same about the popular pickup. It will still come in a variety of cab styles and bed lengths, including:

  • Regular cab style, which can come with your choice of either a standard, 6-foot 6-inch bed, or a longer, 8-foot long bed
  • SuperCab, this extended cab style can also be ordered with either the standard or long, 8-foot bed
  • SuperCrew, the final cab style, the crew cab, is only available with either a short bed that measures 5-feet, 6-inches long, or the standard bed

The Ford-built F-150 in 2018 will be stronger than ever, too, thanks to the aluminum body construction the model received a couple of years ago. This incredibly strong chassis will be available on the long list of F-150 trims.
